Stanley Gray Prestige Lecture - Coral Reefs in their International Year

This year's Stanley Gray Lecture will be presented by Professor M James C Crabbe, Supernumerary Fellow, Wolfson College, Oxford University

This year, 2018, is the third International Year of the Reef (IYOR2018). How are coral reefs surviving in the face of ever-increasing global warming and environmental stress? The talk will cover: aspects of climate change; coral reefs and why we should care about them; reefs in the Caribbean and in the Indo-Pacific; effects of environmental stress, adaptation and evolution in extreme environments and how that can help us understand climate change mitigation; moving from science to conservation, and some of the latest modelling of geoengineering and solar radiation management. And what can we do to help them become resilient and survive in the future.

About the Speaker

James Crabbe is an Emeritus Professor of Biochemistry, a Supernumerary Fellow of Wolfson College, Oxford University, and Honorary Professor at Changchun University of Science and Technology, China. From 2014-2017 he was a Senior Research Associate in the Department of Zoology, Oxford University. He is a Vice-President and Council Member of IMarEST and a Trustee & Member of the Management Committee of the Guild of Benevolence. He is Chair of the Education Committee of the International Society for Reef Studies, and Committee Member of the International Year of the Reef (IYOR) 2018.

He has been Professor and Executive Dean of Creative Arts, Technologies & Science at the University of Bedfordshire, Professor and Head of the School of Animal & Microbial Sciences at the University of Reading, and Governing Body Fellow at Wolfson College, Oxford. In 2006 he won the 6th Aviva / Earthwatch International Award for Climate Change Research, and in 2008 received the Award of Outstanding International Contribution to the Creative Industry of China during the 3rd China Creative Industry Awards, presented at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing.

His research, spanning biomedical & environmental sciences and education, has resulted in 250 Research publications in refereed journals, books, book chapters, and reviews, plus 14 items of commercial molecular modelling software. He is National Leader of Governance for the Association of Colleges (since 2014), and Chair of Governors of Central Bedfordshire Further Education College (since 2010). James is a Magistrate in London, and takes a special interest in the Prison Education Reform Agenda. He is on the Court of Assistants of the Worshipful Company of Educators, is a Liveryman of the Musicians’ Company and a Member of the Honourable Company of Master Mariners, in the City of London.
