Prof. Lait Mohan Patnaik is the world-leading scientistwith high impact to the society and community in his field. He obtained his PhDin the area of real time systems in 1978 and DSc in the areas of computersystems and architectures in 1989 both from the Indian Institute of Science,Bangalore. During 1971-2011 he was on the faculty of the Indian Institute ofScience, Bangalore, engaged in teaching and research in the areas of computerscience and engineering and real-time control. His teaching and researchinterests have been in the areas of computer architecture, parallel anddistributed computing including high performance computing, soft computingincluding neural networks and evolutionary computation, computationalneuroscience, theoretical computer science, computer cognition includingartificial intelligence and machine learning. In these areas he has published over1300 papers in refereed international journals, conference proceedings, bookchapters, edited books and technical reports. He has supervised over 30Doctoral students and over 200 Masters students in the above areas. He is aFellow of the IEEE (USA), The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS, Trieste, Italy)and all the four leading Science and Engineering Academies of India. As a ViceChancellor of the Defence Institute of Advanced Technology under the Ministryof Defence, Government of India, he had initiated a number of programs in theareas of nano- technology and cyber security for defence applications. Afterhis superannuation in 2011, he has been serving as an Honorary Professor withthe Indian Institute of Science and Adjunct Professor, NASI (National Academyof Sciences India) Senior Scientist with the National Institute of AdvancedStudies,Bangalore. For his research contributions, he has been awarded morethan 30 Awards, notable among them is the IEEE Computer Society’s TechnicalAchievement Award .One of his papers on Adaptive Genetic Algorithms has beencited over 3800 times by Google Scholar. Other than his research interests, hespends substantial amount of his time in visiting a number of technicalinstitutions in the country to interact with faculty members and students, toorganize conferences and deliver talks, primarily to improve the quality ofIndian higher education system.
